Fashion for a Good Cause

Last weekend we threw a fashion fundraiser which featured a vintage sale, music, bubbly, and lots of beautiful people!

As you all know as the seasons change so does our wardrobe; all the summer clothes get replaced by winter clothing and vice versa, which is a great opportunity to get rid of all those clothes you don’t wear anymore.

The initial idea behind the event was a closet cleanout: we all have clothes that just sit there in our closets and collect dust and that, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise, we will never wear again. We encouraged some of the best dressed fashionistas, bloggers and boutiques to get rid of all that clutter and donate it to our event.

Besides demonstrating bold acts of recycling both by those who donated and by those who bought secondhand, all proceeds from the event were donated to an organization supporting children living in southern Israel, who have been subjected to acts of terrorism and who are emotionally and physically scarred.

Everyone pitched in and donated! Fashion bloggers, shops and boutiques, our families and friends, fashionistas, and other people just looking to do good. The amount of clothes we received was unbelievable, as was the support and positive feedback! The event was a great success, in attendance were women of all ages and sizes looking to find treasures for their wardrobe and at the same time offer their support for the future of our children.

In accordance with the theme of recycling for a better future, the event was held at re:Loft, an art and design loft studio which deals with recycling in art and design. The owner of the loft, Danielle Dafni, is a multitalent: video editor by profession, as well as an artist, designer and event planner.

Danielle’s loft was the perfect backdrop to the eclectic mix of items in the sale; its spacious terrace offers panoramic views of Tel Aviv and it is filled with amazing furniture, some designed by herself and her father, others by world renowned designers such as Ron Arad and Charles and Ray Eams. The beautiful art was painted by Danielle herself.

Here’s what we wore:

Vera wore a tulle overlay Little Black Dress with a metal and PVC collar necklace and studded leather moccasins.

Rony wore a heart print sweater over a polka dot dress with a studded belt, gray tights, peep toe platforms and a pearl bib necklace.

Casual Glam

Lately fashion has been all about the opulent, the festive and glamorous, the excessive, the Baroque. Designers everywhere have been sending their models down the catwalk in clothes, shoes and accessories rich enough to suit 19th century duchesses.

While we adore this trend, not all of us regular day fashionistas have the guts, the confidence, the money and the body to pull off head to toe baroque like certain Vogue editors (ehemm Anna Dello Russo).

For us, practicality is usually the top priority and we must find a way to put together an outfit that -while never neglecting bon chic- works around the clock for our hectic schedules. While over the top always makes a statement, it must also be accessible.

Vera’s favorite Baroque pieces in her wardrobe are a knit golden threaded pullover and a purple rope and gold necklace.

These pieces alone are so attention-grabbing they could make the whole outfit.

Vera went for the cool biker chic look, choosing mostly blacks to offset the dramatic pieces. Under the knit cardigan she wore a sheer top which made the outfit more romantic, leather jacket, dark jeans, and faux-fur trimmed booties.

Vera’s necklace is such a show maker she didn’t need any other major accessories.

Rony’s favorite Baroque pieces are a brownish gray lace dress and gold and emerald earrings.

Rony’s dress, with its feminine lace and curve hugging shape is too provocative to be worn during the daytime. Rony made the dress more demure by wearing a peplum rhinestones-adorned blouse.

The glamorous look can be achieved with just a few key items that keep everyone on their toes, yet don’t look overdone.

We took advantage of the location of the photoshoot to have a drink ; no matter how much we talk on the phone and see each other we still find plenty to chat about!

Belles of the Circus Ball

Hello fashionable people!

Great fashion designers are not appraised only for the trends they create but first and foremost for the detailing of their creations. A designer piece doesn’t have to be “fashionable” per se or scream the latest trend but rather must have unique qualities all its own, whether in the fabrics, the craftsmanship, the sewing, the cuts, etc.
We love to discover and support young rising stars in the fashion industry, and one of our favorite promising young designers by far is Adi Ashur; and let’s just say we are deeply impressed! The multitalented Ms. Ashur expresses her penchant for all fields of design: jewelry, textile, structural design, in her clothes and accessories creating very interesting and unique pieces.

Adi’s latest collection is a theatrical yet lavish fete of upholstery, chiffon, canvas, satin, linen, organdy, and lace, as well as feathers, metal, beads, glass, and cotton weaving.

Evening Gowns

The first dress Rony wore was a maxi satin flower print dress with sheer lining in the front. The delicate A shape of the dress is flattering on every figure and gives the illusion of a long body and never-ending legs.

Adi designed the print of the dress using graphic design softwares and then dyed the fabric herself.

Rony wore the gown with an oversized canvas flower necklace, rhinestone cuffs and rhinestone adorned briefs (all designed and created by Adi).

Rony felt like a major diva in this red carpet-ready gown!

Vera wore a pink layered skirt sewn out of upholstery, buttoned up blouse, and an 18th century-inspired flower print canvas waist coat with appliqués. The look was completed with a bright pink cuff and pastel colored leggings.

Vera was so fab she could’ve hung out with the likes of Marie Antoinette or in Alice’s wonderland!

Day and Night Out and About

Vera’s second outfit was a layered natural satin orange skirt with a hand knitted cape and print leggings.

The voluminous skirt was perfect for a slim body like Vera’s, it accentuated her waist and hips and made her legs seem even slimmer.

Vera offset the couture look and made it more wearable with a casual gray tank top.

Rony’s second dress was a hand-printed yellow collar mini dress which she wore with hand-printed leggings and a chain and glass necklace that attaches at the back of the dress.

This is the ultimate party dress: it has a sexy waist-cinching cut, it flows when you move and is so unique you don’t need to wear any accessories.

However fun, this dress does not disappoint on the craftsmanship; it is a gorgeous couture creation!

The shoes worn throughout were hand-dyed and printed by Adi.

Clothes like these require a very unique backdrop. And so we visited Tel Aviv’s Florentine neighborhood, a bustling center of design studios, workshops and furniture shops.

The walls of most streets in this neighborhood are adorned with graphic designs, ads, writings and graffiti. This isn’t like any graffiti we’d seen before though, the graphics in this neighborhood are true works of art!

Needless to say we felt like real stars walking down the streets of Florentine in Adi’s amazing creations! Thank you Adi!

What We Wear and fashion designer Adi Ashur

The inspiration for Adi’s latest collection came from old circus posters and the retro graphic quality they had. The posters announced the arrival of a new circus and the feeling of a magical phenomenon filled with lights and colors. Adi wanted to create in her collection the effect of walking placards, prints patterns and textures that become three dimensional, come alive and assume a life of their own. In her prints, cuts and techniques Adi brought the old circus into the 21st century.

A Trench for the Rain

Rain drops keep falling on my head… but that don’t mean my eyes will soon be turning red!

Winter is here! Of course Europe and the US have been enjoying wintery weather for a while now but Israel has only started getting rain and cold in recent months. So finally it’s time for us to break out the scarves, boots, umbrellas and our all time favorite winter must-have, the trench coats!

Made a style icon by Burberry, the trench coat is a must have for every winter wardrobe and goes with everything for everything: day to evening, high to low. This kind of fabulousness makes us wish it was raining all the time… ok well maybe not all the time!

Vera wore her windbreaker version with a puffy knit turtleneck, plum skirt, cowboy boots, bright blue knit hat, leather drawstring bag and drop pendant necklace.

Rony wore her navy ruched sleeved version with a cowl neck sweater, print maxi skirt, knit scarf, faux fur booties, oversized patent leather bag, drop earrings and multicolored PVC and ribbon necklace by Marni for H&M.

A Perfect Match

Hello fellow fashionistas!

Us modern women are always busy – whether we juggle family, studies, work, supporting our men, a million errands and running a household and of course try to leave a little time for shopping. We don’t always have time to plan our outfits and really think about what to wear on certain occasions. What’s easier than wearing a matched set?! Minimum thought is required, 100% fabulousness achieved.

The return of 80′s and 90′s fashion brought back the perfectly matched sets. The modern take on this trend is much more exciting though: sets that are made effortlessly by putting together similar prints, colors, fabrics, etc. This goes hand in hand with the current fashion attitude of making the outfit all your own and letting your confidence and creativity shine.

Rony wore a sheer owl print chiffon blouse with sheer chiffon overlay shorts, gray fedora, gray peep toe booties, and leather satchel.

The matching fabrics and similar patterns and colors of the pieces Rony wore made this a perfect set and the masculine hat together with the ultra trendy booties made Rony’s outfit uber cool.

Vera wore a flannel button down shirt, turquoise denim skirt and green blazer with checkered All Stars.

Vera’s layered outfit is perfect for the in between seasons. While the jacket and skirt are all modern business woman, Vera’s slap-on-and-go shoes will make this outfit comfortable for any girl’s hectic day.

So when choosing what to wear for the busy day ahead of you we suggest using your creativity to put together your perfect set. One way you could always change it up and keep the matching interesting is with your makeup and nailpolish.

What We Wear in London

Last week I went on a weeklong excursion to London to explore the rainy city post-Olympics, as well as  do some shopping as London is home to some of my (and Vera’s) favorite shopping destinations! Here are some of my favorite attractions in the city, best places to shop and of course, what I wore!

Favorite shopping areas:

Soho – Soho, particularly around Carnaby Street, has some amazing stores which I loved not only for the merchandise but also for how it is displayed and how the stores are designed.

Benefit’s store, designed like a sweets diner, is too sweet to skip out on!

Some other favorites were Dahlia, which had a gorgeous mix of girly with London punk, Fornarina, whose store had an amazing liquid staircase, and Lazy Oaf, which displayed sunglasses on skull lamps.

Notting Hill – This neighborhood has shopping destinations which offer very unique pieces. From the famous Portobello Road market on Sundays to vintage shops that sell amazing treasures, this is a great destination for one of a kind items.

Primark – Vera and my guilty pleasure, this store sells the trendiest clothes, shoes, bags and accessories for ridiculous prices. The biggest one in town is located on Oxford Street; our advice is to get there as the store opens, it gets really busy and crowded very early and the lines to the fitting rooms get impossibly long. As you can see, my friends and I went a little crazy!

Camden – This northern London neighborhood is home to a multitude of markets, thrift and vintage stores that offer trendy and unique items for very good prices. Camden is known for its goth population and punky bars, so here you’re sure to encounter crazy platforms and spikes on everything.

Art for the Soul:
The amazing thing about London is its museums are free, except for some temporary exhibits, so it’s absolutely a must to visit and see what’s on.

I love visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum every time I’m in town, it has extensive art collections and impressive architecture.

Now on display is a very cool Ball gowns exhibit showing gowns from the 19th century throughout the ages, and contemporary gowns by some amazing and influential designers.

Another very cool exhibit currently on display at the V&A: innovations in furniture. My favorite piece was a chair made by fashion designer Issey Miyake from leftover fabric rolls from his garment designs.

Exhibition Road, on which the V&A Museum is located, is now hosting an outdoor sculpture exhibition featuring works by acclaimed British sculptor Tony Cragg. It was very interesting to see how the crowds interacted with the artwork.

The Tate Modern always showcases amazing pieces by the most influential contemporary artists; Now on display is a special exhibit by British artist Damien Hirst. Some of my favorites at the museum were a sculpture by Marisa Merz which, although it was constructed out of aluminum plates, is somehow so organic and “alive” and reminded me of floating sea creatures.

Other works that I particularly liked were pieces that incorporated video art and installation to create unique thought-provoking effects.

The British Museum is a must-visit even just for its architecture. The museum’s inner court roof was designed by Foster and Partners in 2000 and is absolutely awe-inspiring not just in itself but in the dialogue it creates between old and new architecture and in the beautiful natural lighting that is created in the space.

Favorite unexpected event
Notting Hill Carnival took place on the weekend of August 25th; the event was like one huge street party that included dancing, music, African drums and a very festive parade. The beer was cheap and the atmosphere was jolly!

What I Wore
“Chic Tourist” outfit – For travelling to any urban destination around the world, my motto is to keep it comfortable but never neglect the chic! I wore stretch skinny jeans, a light loose blouse and a jacket in case it got chilly. I wore moccasins which are very comfortable to walk in all day, but are also chic and classy. I kept it interesting by accessorizing with a pearl bib necklace and pink lipstick.

Day to Evening outfit – When exploring around a big city all day you must be prepared for anything. The best idea is to wear an outfit you can transform from day casual to a more evening look. I wore a high waisted black skirt with a loose green blouse, opaque tights, and moccasins. I made the outfit cool for day or night by wearing a print scarf and a rope and gold necklace.

For drinks on a chilly evening I added a fur vest.

Rainy Day outfit – Even in August London is very rainy and at times chilly; the best idea is to wear layers you can take off when going indoors or on the underground, and put back on when strolling outside. I wore a loose long sleeved T-shirt with a print skirt, tights and leather booties. I piled on the layers with my fur vest and warm jacket.

Vera’s favorite London outfit- Vera worked her layered look in layered tops, striped knit cardigan, miniskirt worn with tights, leather booties, scarf, and layered necklaces.

Don’t forget to take your camera and an umbrella!

A T-shirt Wonderland

Whether you won it in some contest, borrowed it from your boyfriend, or wore it only around the house, every T-shirt has a story, which makes them more sentimental than most items in your closet. Plus, T-shirts are some of the most comfortable clothes you could own; they require no effort, you just put them on and go. But can T-shirts be chic and stylish? Absolutely!

When worn with such feminine skirts, the T-shirts make the outfit cool and unexpected. Putting together an elegant item with a casual or athletic item makes the outfit more relaxed and cool and appropriate for almost any occasion.
Here are some of our favorite T-shirts and how we made them look chic:

Outfit 1: Mad as a hatter

Vera wore a Civilian army green sleeveless T-shirt with a form fitting black zippered skirt, cropped vest, gold link necklace and platform booties

I wore a print T-shirt with a vintage puffy skirt, link stretch belt, top hat and strappy high heeled sandals.

Outfit 2: Candy Colors

Vera wore a yellow printed Civilian T-shirt with a green wash denim skirt, studded belt, beaded necklace, and leather moccasins

A great way to dress up a T-shirt outfit is by wearing big bold accessories. We did so with our belts, shoes and eye catching jewelry.

I wore a printed fuchsia T-shirt (worn tied up) with a high waisted studded skirt, glasses necklace, zebra ring and studded canvas moccasins

Outfit 3: Play on Plaid

Vera wore a printed glitter T-shirt, plaid A-line skirt, orange leather belt, beaded necklace, and plaid peep toes

It’s a common and outdated cliché that different prints and clashing colors don’t go together. That cliché has been proven wrong, so don’t be afraid of mixing patterns and prints! Just make sure to keep some of the prints calmer to emphasize a certain item or piece of clothing.

I wore a light blue Civilian T-shirt, plaid high waisted skirt, leather studded belt, metal and plastic collar necklace, zebra ring, and strappy high heeled sandals

This is a fashion tip that is relevant to both ladies and gents: pick your favorite, coolest T-shirts and put them together with a more posh item from your wardrobe, add some bold accessories and voila, a look that’ll take you from day to evening!

Summer Party Rockin’!

Hey guys!

Summer nights are getting hotter and so are our going out outfits! Sleeveless, strapless, basically less! We chose summer dresses made out of breathable, gentle, flowy fabrics. These dresses are sexy and stylish for a night out yet chic and classy to suit a day or dinner party. While the lengths of the dresses can be kept demure, bold colors are a great way to bring out your wild side, especially in summer to show off your tan! We decided to keep to the superhero color palette: superwoman bright red and royal blue.

Rony wore a red chiffon leopard print strapless dress  with chunky heeled strappy sandals. She wore the outfit with blue and white striped bag, thin brown belt, and animal pendant necklaces.

The flowiness of her dress is perfect for any season and flattering on all body types and the cut of the dress shows off a small waist like Rony’s.

I wore a 50′s style red and blue print dress with a denim vest, beige cutout wedges and a camel handbag.

The A-lined cut of my dress is especially flattering for a very feminine look, the shape and the print give the illusion of curviness.

I accessorized with a natural coral beads necklace.

Don’t forget that if you chose to reveal on top with a strapless cut, keep it classy and understated with the length of the dress.

Lace and Crochet to brighten your Summer Day!

Hello there dears!

Knits are huge this season, especially crochet and lace! The more granny chic and authentic the look, the better!

For this post we played with different fabrics and textures that are right in the summer heat – especially in a city as humid as Tel Aviv.

Rony  wore  light crème high waisted lace shorts with a puffy sleeved flower print button up shirt, beige wedges and retro sunglasses. Speaking of granny chic, the jacket Rony wore belongs to her grandmother and is a fabulous mixture of light fabric and structured retro shape.

As the shorts have a beautiful pattern that Rony wanted to show off, she wore a light colored patterned shirt tucked in so that both the stitching and the color of the shorts are emphasized.

To give her look some edge, Rony wore a woven gold African-inspired necklace with a contrasting pattern and a vintage woven clutch.

I on the other hand went all out for the granny/flowery look.  I wore low waisted crochet shorts with a floral tunic top, a thin camel belt and knit granny vest.

since the shorts are low waisted, the only tops they look classy with are long voluminous ones. The contrast in volumes between the shorts and the top is very flattering and makes my legs look extra long!

I wore my outfit with camel wedges and a big straw hat, also adorned with flowers. The big gold link necklace I wore actually used to be a belt but I decided to wear it as jewelry!

The light, breathable fabrics and the creamy colors go perfectly in the hot summer days. However, don’t forget to give your outfit a little eye catching edge here and there – keep it interesting, cool, and unexpected!

Wardrobe 101 – Episode 2

Hello you fashion people,

On this episode of Wardrobe 101 What We Wear styled Carine Baker, a very busy girl with a background in fashion who doesn’t have much time or energy for it anymore.

Carine turned to us at What We Wear to help her sort through all the strong items she has but doesn’t know how to put together. Carine’s original style is very much Las Vegas, where she grew up: sweats during the day and everything flashy and revealing at night. She has a lot of short shorts, see through tops and sky high heels. While these pieces are all fabulous separately, together they may look a bit too revealing and tacky. Our goal was to show Carine how to wear these separates in a new classy and chic way that would also flatter her figure.

Carine used to style fabulous outfits for herself and her friends but she complained to us that somewhere along the line she lost her mojo. Our job was not only to put together her favorite clothes but also bring back her flare and the stylish touch she used to have. We think it worked quite well!

Office fashionista: Ripped white jeans, 3 toned shirt, print scarf, pearl necklace worn as bracelet, pearl earrings, and tan wedge pumps. We also tried this look with polka dot peep toes which would be more doable to wear for a full day

LBD Carine style: Sleeveless Little Black Dress, beaded fringe vest, golden chain belt, gold bangles, python sandals. We also went for shiny faux croc heels to give the look a different feel.

Outfit number 5
Punk rocker: Mesh hooded top, high waisted shorts, oversized stones necklace, feather earrings, and peep toe wedges

City weekend outfit: Flower print mesh blouse, jean shorts, oversized knit cardigan, print scarf, and high heeled espadrilles

Sweet for summer: print shorts, print mesh top, sleeveless knit vest, fish pendant necklace, bangles, and multicolored rope sandals

Chic Mademoiselle:
